It loses shadow tones much more when correcting the automatic exposure.<\/p>\n<p>My conclusion &#8211; the camera doesn&#8217;t really change the exposure when dialing in EV correction. It just shifts the recorded data up or down, thus resulting in loss of quality. If you need maximum information at a weird exposure setting, set it manually.<\/p>\n<p>Examples below.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>First, the normal exposure. 1\/250 at f\/4<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image19\" alt=\"auto-exposed image\" src=\"https:\/\/urmet.sytes.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/CIMG1735.JPG\" \/><br \/>\nThe histogram looks very good.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image20\" alt=\"cimg1735_hist.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/urmet.sytes.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/cimg1735_hist.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, manual overexposure by two stops &#8211; 1\/60 at f\/4<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image21\" alt=\"CIMG1737.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/urmet.sytes.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/CIMG1737.JPG\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The histogram doesn&#8217;t retain shadows, but isn&#8217;t too bad.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image22\" alt=\"cimg1737_hist.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/urmet.sytes.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/cimg1737_hist.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Third, the &#8220;easy&#8221; overexposure by two stops. 1\/40 at f\/2.8. There should be less than half a stop difference with the previous photo.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image23\" alt=\"CIMG1740.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/urmet.sytes.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/CIMG1740.JPG\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The histogram is bad.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image24\" alt=\"cimg1740_hist.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/urmet.sytes.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/cimg1740_hist.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For me, exposure correction on the digicam has lost its meaning. I used to have the left-right keys mapped to exposure, I now have them for changing the metering mode. Hopefully that will be a better use.<br \/>\nI ran some tests with underexposure as well.
