I need an SMTP setup that would work seamlessly as I move for one network to another. Ideally, I’d like to configure a smarthost (or direct delivery) based on the network I’m in currently. If this would be Debian/exim based, everything would work anywhere I am.
I’m currently using a local Exim server with direct delivery and a range of fallback hosts. In cases where SMTP is blocked to anywhere except the local SMTP server, this works quite well. On some networks the delivery time suffers, though, as the server successively times out all the SMTP servers.
Due to an ISP change at Proekspert, I’ve stumbled onto a situation where some of the fallback hosts are accessible but not accepting my e-mails. Hence the need for a more intelligent configuration.
My current thinking is to look into Exim’s built-in PERL (grr…).
