The SMTP problem is still giving me nightmares.

I think the easiest thing is to use webmail when away. If you have a webserver but your mail provider has no web interface, setting up SquirrelMail took me about 30 minutes a month ago.

The next option, from a corporate user’s standpoint, is to use the VPN connection to the office for sending e-mail. Or have an e-mail set-up on your mobile phone. EMT has a service just for that. We have also written a WAP client for IMAP, which is my choice for a quick mail check.

For Windows users, Autoroute SMTP seems to do the trick very elegantly.

Linux users are experimenting with sending mail over an SSH tunnel to your own mail server. This is interesting, as I have already gone into some trouble to make our SSH server accessible from closed-down networks…
